From a Family Room Floor to a Whole Lot of Sweetness: The Story Behind Baked by Boxed Up Expressions
If you had told me a few years ago that I'd be running a small-batch bakery in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, I probably would have looked at you like you had lost your mind.
Seriously. This was NOT the plan!
Believe it or not, this whole journey started during COVID, right on my family room floor. The world was going through such an awful time, and I wanted to do something fun. Something that would make me smile and maybe bring a little happiness to someone else, too.
I wasn't thinking about building a business. I wasn't dreaming about running a bakery. I was just looking for a little joy during a time when the world felt pretty heavy.
And sometimes, the smallest things can turn into something much bigger than you ever imagined.
What started as a fun little project grew into something more. Eventually, it became part of a little gift shop tucked into our local plaza, where the goal was to bring people together through thoughtful gifts, support small businesses, and create something special for our community.
Then came the cake bites. And well… here we are!
Those little bites of cake became the beginning of a whole new chapter. What started as one product grew into a love for creating mini treats, trying new ideas, and finding ways to bring a little sweetness to people's celebrations.
I absolutely did NOT think it would go this far.
What started on my family room floor as a way to make people smile has grown into something bigger for our community. And that, to me, is one of the sweetest parts of this entire journey.
How Did We Get From a Family Room Floor to a Bakery?
Honestly, if there's one thing being a small business owner has taught me, it's that you have to be willing to roll with the punches.
Business doesn't always follow the plan you had in your head. Sometimes customers show you what they love. Sometimes an idea takes off when you least expect it. And sometimes, what you thought was one chapter turns out to be the beginning of an entirely new story.
For me, that story started with a little bit of creativity, a desire to make people smile, and a whole lot of figuring things out as I went.
Today, Baked by Boxed Up Expressions is a small-batch bakery in Johnstown, Pennsylvania, creating handmade cake bites, mini cakes, cupcakes, seasonal treats, and all sorts of little desserts that bring people together.
And every time I get to be part of someone's birthday, holiday, celebration, fundraiser, or special event, I'm reminded that this business has become about so much more than selling treats.
It's about being part of our community.
